Norfolk-based Arts for Learning Virginia (A4L Virginia) has been bringing arts-in-education programs to school children in Virginia since 1955. Starting with a single string ensemble and a handful of volunteers, today the organization is the leading provider of quality arts programming in the Commonwealth, offering culturally diverse programs in music, dance, theater, and literary and visual arts.
With a mission to inspire and engage students in and through the arts, A4L Virginia’s professional teaching artists work creatively to integrate the arts into their students’ lives. Curriculum is aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and tied to core classroom subjects. Arts for Learning offers an array of arts performances and workshops for children of all ages, creative virtual learning, and professional development in arts-integration techniques for educators.
A4L Virginia’s signature initiatives include tailor-made residencies, early childhood readiness programs, hands-on workshops, interactive performances, and arts education summer camps. Through subsidies made possible by its many community partnerships, Arts for Learning Virginia has expanded its programs targeting underserved populations including low-income, special needs, and military-connected students.
